SHERPA CORAL WOUND
GLASS BEADS: Sherpa Coral isn’t coral at all. They are
actually wound glass trade beads which resemble the color of
coral and were handcrafted mostly in China and sometimes in
India. The beads are named for the Sherpa (which is Tibetan
for “eastern people”) which are an ethnic group from the most
mountainous region of Nepal, high in the Himalayas. Sherpas
migrated from Tibet to Nepal within the last 300 – 400 years.
The term “Sherpa” is also used to refer to local people,
typically men, who are employed as guides in mountaineering
expeditions in the Himalayas, particularly Mount Everest.
These particular Sherpa Coral beads are dated to the 1880s.
Origin: China; Collected: Tibet.
ZEBRA SHELL BEADS: I have researched these shells extensively
and there is very little information on them except that they
are very old (over 100 years old) and very rare. I believe
they belong to a species of gastropods that burrow in the sand
or mud in rivers or lakes. These cute little shells are
traditionally strung with coral and are unique to Berber
jewelry. The Berbers have lived in North Africa since the
earliest recorded time, primarily settling in Morocco. Much of
their art is in the form of jewelry (intricate details and
exquisite enamel work), leather and finely woven carpets and
is highly collectible. These shells originated in Morocco and
were collected in Morocco.
