BRASS HAIR TUBES: These handcrafted brass tubes were made by utilizing the Lost Wax Method which has been used for thousands of years. It is a painstakingly and long process which consists of 4 stages: creation of wax model; forming the mold with rice husk, sand and clay and adding holes or “nalis”; casting or firing the molds by placing the actual mold on top shelf of oven (which allows the nalis to burn out and permits the wax to drip out) and by placing the crucibles holding the metal on the bottom shelf of the oven in order to melt (molten metal is then poured into the hollow mold, hence the “Lost Wax Method”); and lastly, finishing the piece for repairs and details.
These exquisite brass tubes were worn as hair decorations by the Woodabe Tribe in Niger, Circa late 1800s (Origin: Nigeria; Collected: Nigeria).
