ANTIQUE ENAMEL
PENDANT: This particular pendant was created by using an
ancient technique of metalsmithing and enameling. A
preliminary sketch was made upon the base metal and the
framework of the piece was done by bending fine ribbons
of metal to match the design of the preliminary artwork.
Once each tiny piece is in place and gently fired to hold
its position, the process of wet packing the enamel onto
the design then begins. A thin layer of color, which is
created by crushing glass or minerals into powder, which
in this case is cobalt, is packed into each division and
then the piece is fired in a kiln. Many layers and firings
go into one piece. Once the enameling process is complete,
the piece is ground and and polished much the same way a
gemstone is cut and polished.
