ANTIQUE ROMAN COIN: Unlike modern coins that have millions of identical strikes, you will rarely see two identical ancient coins. This is because each coin was struck by hand, with different alignments, pressures and sometimes different temperatures. The bronze or steel die was engraved with intricate designs and images. The flan, or the preheated coin blank, was heated to a point slightly lower than the melting point of the metal and it was placed with thongs between the anvil and punch dies. The punch die was struck with a hammer to impress the metal between the dies, thus creating the coin. Over time, the dies wear out and new ones were made. Research shows that this particular Roman coin is thought to be of the Imperatorial (Circa 60 B.C. to 27 A.D.) or Roman Provincial Period (27 A.D. to 297 A.D.) and not of the Byzantine Period (491 A.D. to 1453 A.D.). The obverse of Byzantine coins generally had a portrait of the Emperor in full frontal portrait which is a departure from Imperial or Provincial coins issued where the Emperor was depicted in profile.
