SILVER AND LAPIS LAZULI EARPLUG PENDANT: This unique handcrafted Silver and Lapis Lazuli Cabochon Pendant is made from an Antique Earplug from Rajasthan, India. Earplugs have been around for centuries and it is impossible to determine who invented the first earplug. Many ancient peoples created homemade earplugs from clay, cotton, or wax to reduce noise and to keep out air particles, dust, water, foreign bodies and excessive wind from entering the ear. The first recorded use of wax earplugs is in the Odyssey, wherein Odysseus’s crew used wax earplugs to avoid being distracted by the Sirens’ songs. An earplug is also a type of ear ornament usually inserted in pierced or distended ear lobes and generally worn by traditional peoples. Earplugs were the direct forerunners of today’s pierced earrings.
