DZI BEAD:
Pronounced “Zee”, this focal bead was made in Nepal and has
been hand-capped in Silver Repousse’. Dzi beads are the most
desirable of all beads in Tibet and the Himalayan Regions. No
one yet knows where and when Dzi beads were made, but the
techniques for making them date back in India about 3,500
years. Before the bead was blackened, the areas to be later
“etched” were left blank by adding a resist (such as grease)
to the surface to prevent those areas from turning black.
There are many myths and legends that follow Dzi. The main
Himalayan belief is that they are dropped from the heavens by
Gods to benefit those who have the good karma to find them.
They are thought to bring good luck, ward off evil (such as
the “evil eye”), and protect the wearer from physical harm and
illness. Because Dzi are thought to have divine origin, they
are considered to be a precious and powerful amulet and can
often be seen in Tibetan Monasteries adorning the most revered
statues and sacred relics.
SILVER REPOUSSE’: Repousse’ is an ancient art of metalworking
technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped
by hammering from the reverse side. This process has been used
for thousands of years to make everything from jewelry to
religious icons and is considered nowadays as almost a “lost
art.”
