GREEN STRIPED, WHITE CORED VENETIAN TRADE BEADS: These beads are double layered and drawn. The beadmaker begins with a fairly large gather of glass which is made hollow primarily by blowing the glass. Then the hollow glass is stretched out or “drawn” by one man alone or pulled between two workers into a long tube. The glass can be decorated before it is drawn out. Rods of glass along the side will make lines on the final bead. Two or more layers of glass may make up the original gather, resulting in beads with a core. The drawn tube becomes the basis for the beads. After it has been cut into yard-long lengths, it is further chopped up into smaller pieces. Stirring the beads with a certain powder that will not melt or react with the glass rounds or smoothes out the sharp ends. Circa early 1900s; Origin: Venice; Collected: Africa.
