LARGE MILLEFIORI
VENETIAN BEADS: Mosaic or Millefiori (A Thousand
Flowers) are made in a very complex technique and the
designs are not painted onto the glass. These beads are
decorated by adding colors atop colors called fancy
elements. When the whole bead is covered with these fancy
elements, it is considered a Mosaic or Millefiori Bead.
These elements are made in the drawing technique; they are
canes without holes in the center, made of several colors
of glass arranged in some pattern. After they are drawn
out into long canes, they are cut into small pieces and
are placed onto the body of a wound bead. Unicolored rods
may be bunched together, hot strips of glass can be laid
atop one another, the glass can be coated with different
colors of glass, the layers can be molded or a combination
can be used. Extraordinary collection of Millefioris,
Circa 1880s (Origin: Venice; Collected: Africa).
ETHIOPIAN PRAYER BEADS: These silver and nickel content old
Ethiopian Prayer Beads are hand-forged. They are either worn or used
as a symbol of their faith and vigorously utilized as a source of
meditation or comfort. It is attested that the wearer or owner of
Ethiopian Prayer Beads will gain a special and new sense of peace,
harmony and well being. These beads show wear on the patina and
dents in the metal caused by extensive use and age, Circa late 19th
Century (Origin: Ethiopia; Collected: Africa).
