BLACK SKUNK “1,000 EYES” VENETIAN TRADE BEADS: These extraordinary matched skunk “1,000” Venetian Trade Beads are very rare – first, because it is hard to find a matched strand of Venetian Beads, especially in this fine condition; and secondly, because the “eyes” have different colored dots. Most of the skunk beads produced were strictly black and white in color and did not have as many eyes such as these, hence the name “1,000 eyes.” There was a great demand for this particular design as they were intended to ward off the “evil eye.” These authentic beads were not molded or painted but wound, Circa 1880s (Origin: Venice; Collected: Africa).
