MALI TERRACOTTA SPINDLE WHORL: This clay bead (approximately 150 – 400 years old) was made and found in the Djoboro and Timbuktu regions of the inland Niger Delta in Mali, Africa. Spindle whorls were used for balancing the spindle as yarn as being spun. Clay spindle whorls have been found in the Niger Delta at settlements dating to the 11th and 12th centuries and are often intricately carved and covered with many incised lines. Similar clay whorls were recently discovered at the Howell Site, a colonial compound in North Carolina. This site has been dated to between 1740’s and 1780’s and is documented as having slaves from Africa.
